How Gambiered Guangdong Silk Is Made

The production of Gambiered Guangdong silk is a slow and labor-intensive process. It begins with high-quality silk fabric, which is repeatedly soaked in a natural dye extracted from plants such as yam or gambier.

After dyeing, the fabric is coated with fine river mud rich in iron and minerals, then laid out under the sun to oxidize. This cycle—dyeing, mud-coating, sun-drying—is repeated many times and can take several weeks or even months.

The final fabric develops its characteristic dark sheen on one side and matte texture on the other, as well as its natural protective properties. Weather, sunlight, and craftsmanship all influence the final result, making each piece unique.
